Megan Mullis Expedition

Deep in the underworld ecosystems of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, also known as the North Pond, lives bacteria that survives in extreme conditions. Megan Mullis, a Ph.D. student studying marine biology with a focus on microbiology in extreme environments, voyaged to the North Pond on a five-week-long expedition. She returned to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Oct. 30. With her, she brought back isolated culture samples collected from sediment 4,500 below the Mid-Atlantic Ridge’s surface.
